An Oxford-educated engineer who has built every layer of the AI stack, from front end to deep learning, for over 15 years.
Ayan has spent 15+ years building every layer of the AI stack: pixel-perfect front ends, massive-scale back ends, data pipelines, and deep learning models (12+ years, long before the hype). At Funzio ($250M exit) he was on the engineering team as the company scaled from 50 to 300+ people in a year; at Yahoo/Flickr he engineered deep learning pipelines at scale; and as a consultant to Google/YouTube he built the YouTube touch-screen experience shown at the Guggenheim.
He holds an MSc from the University of Oxford and an MBA, so he sees the P&L, the product strategy, and the architectural trade-offs alongside the code. After 6 years in San Francisco and 9 in Tokyo, including a VP role at a startup, he leads DynaMeet with Silicon Valley speed and Japanese craftsmanship. He is a permanent resident of Japan.
Christopher Ax
Started Schmatz in Japan more than 10 years ago and grew it to a 1,000-person team, then founded WAY Equity Partners to rapidly build technology companies in Japan.
More than 10 years ago, Chris started Schmatz in Tokyo with his lifelong friend Marc Lütten, beginning with a single food truck. He grew it into a nationwide beer and restaurant company with 40+ locations and a 1,000-strong team, raising over $100M along the way.
Before Schmatz, he cut his teeth at Rocket Internet, rapidly scaling companies across global markets. He went on to found WAY Equity Partners, the Tokyo-based permanent-capital company that builds and backs enduring businesses, in part to rapidly build up technology companies in Japan. DynaMeet was born out of WAY, and Chris is a bona fide founder of the company and serves as its Chairman. He is not involved in the day-to-day; he supports DynaMeet through governance and counsel to the leadership team.
A product leader who led product teams and launched AI-driven automation at the fintech Better, co-founded SafeSide Surgical, and served as a Kleiner Perkins product management fellow. Based in Tokyo, he now leads AI strategy and product at NTT DATA.
